
Jewish women, although generally excluded from public music-making in traditional Middle Eastern communities, tell us a fascinating story of creativity, resilience, and richness. The talk will present the various spheres in which Jewish women made music during the first half of the twentieth century in Arab lands, and how this past shapes the musical scene nowadays.
Dr Dafna Dori is author of the book The Brothers Al-Kuwaity and the Iraqi Song 1930–1950. Together with her mother, Suad Dori, she performed Arabic songs for twenty years.
