Haskalah – The Jewish Enlightenment in Central Europe by Dr. Louise Hecht

After a general introduction to the question ‘What is Enlightenment?,‘ the boundaries between Haskalah and Enlightenment will be delineated. Furthermore, the Christian discourse on Jews will be juxtaposed to new Jewish self-definitions during the eighteenth century. Focusing on different topics, e.g. language, social disciplining, education, press and gender, we will analyze the process of cultural transfer between the Jewish and the non-Jewish society.

About the Speaker:

Louise Hecht is a Jewish historian, trained at the University of Vienna and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Her teaching and research focuses on the cultural and legal history of Jews in central Europe since the seventeenth century.
