Join us for a special evening dedicated to the life and literary legacy of Lili Berger, one of the most insightful Jewish women writers of the twentieth century. Translator and editor Vivian Felsen will present her newly published volume On the Waves of Destiny: Writings by Lili Berger, a collection that brings Berger’s voice to a new generation of readers. The discussion will be moderated by Urszula (Ulla) Chowaniec, literary scholar teaching Yiddish Women’s Writing at Paideia Folkhögskola and Lund University in Sweden.

In her essays, Berger chronicled the turbulent political and moral landscapes of her time – from interwar Poland and wartime Paris to postwar Communist Poland—while memorializing fellow Jewish artists and writers lost in the Holocaust, including Bruno Schulz, Emanuel Ringelblum, and Gela Seksztajn.

The event is part of an engaging seminar series exploring the voices, legacies, and cultural impact of Jewish women writing in Yiddish. Led by Urszula (Ulla) Chowaniec, a literary scholar teaching Yiddish Women’s Writing at Paideia Folkhögskola and Lund University in Sweden, the series brings together scholars, translators, and readers to rediscover authors who shaped modern Jewish literature and thought.
